TAP Air Portugal relaunches Los Angeles (LAX) route

TAP Air Portugal started flying to Los Angeles in April 1989 using the L-1011 TriStar 500. The route, called the "Bi-coastal" was seasonal and only lasted until the early 90s.

Yesterday, TAP relaunched the route to Los Angeles, 6 years after flying again to San Francisco, this time using their A330neos.

I thought it would be nice to remember those days when the L-1011 was the flagship of the fleet:

This is a nice footage of a position flight during what was probably one the last L-1011 passenger flights operation in 2013. Barq Aviation was operating for Askari Aviation out of Pakistan:

L-1011 Stargazer still making history

Nice to see the L-1011 Stargazer alive and kicking:

The U. S. Space Force successfully launched the Tactically Responsive Launch-2 (TacRL-2) mission on a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on June 13 at 4:11 a.m. EDT, delivering a technology demonstration satellite to Low Earth Orbit.

ICON launch set for this Wednesday

News from NASA's Kennedy Space Center:
NASA and Northrop Grumman completed their Launch Readiness Review on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There are no technical issues being worked at this time. NASA’s Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, satellite mission is scheduled to launch Wednesday, Nov. 7, by Northrop Grumman’s Pegasus XL rocket, which will be carried aloft by the company’s L-1011 Stargazer aircraft taking off from the Skid Strip at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Aéroports de Lyon - TriStar, a guided tour

Although this is not a recent video, it's always nice to learn more about the L-1011 that was written off in 2001, after flying through a hail storm near Lyon.

This aircraft was acquired from Air Transat by Aéroports de Lyon and remains preserved at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport to this date.

Exciting days ahead for Stargazer and N910TE

For those who love the L-1011, we are certainly living exciting days with another Pegasus launch scheduled for tomorrow and with the perspective of the ex-Flying Hospital being flown to Kansas  City where it will be preserved.

The Stargazer and the ex-Flying Hospital are perhaps two of the most notorious L-1011s that were given unusual missions after their passenger service life and that survived until today.

NASA's Kennedy Space Center broadcasted yesterday a video about the upcoming Pegasus launch where they invited their viewers to get inside the Stargazer.

And also TriStar Experienced shared some photos on their Facebook of N910TE with new titles and acknowledgments applied on the fuselage while giving us the following information:

N910TE © TriStar Experience
With her name and acknowledgements applied, N910TE is one step closer to her ferry flight to KC. Once in KC, we start prepping her for kids STEM educational programs.
We expect to be back tomorrow, hopefully with news of another successful launch!

An article published on the Kansas City Star Site reveals more about the intentions of TriStar History and Preservation on their recently acquired L-1011, the ex-Flying Hospital.

They expect to ferry this L-1011 from Tucson to Kansas City within two to three weeks and use it for their STEM educational project.

The integral airstairs that give access to the lower deck - one of the two aircraft delivered to PSA in this configuration - are a major advantage according to the sources.

About N91011, the ex-Portuguese L-1011, also owned by TriStar, we can find this reference:
TriStar History also owns the TWA Wings of Pride McDonnell Douglas MD-83, a British Aircraft Corp. One-Eleven and another L-1011 in California.

L-1011 lower deck galley

Two very nice videos covering the features of the L-1011's lower deck galley can be seen on YouTube:

Author of the videos: Carla Kittler

These videos were filmed inside an ATA Airlines' L-1011-100 series, probably N194AT. Only standard length TriStars were equipped with a lower deck galley.

L-1011 retirement video (Air Transat)

Nice footage about Air Transat's L-1011 final retirement. Air Transat operated the type between 1987 and 2004.

TAP TV Commercials in the 80s

With the renewal of the fleet in the early 80s and with the arrival of the first L-1011s, TAP advertised its new product in a typical Portuguese way. The L-1011 is the aircraft shown in these adverts, being presented as a "race horse". In the last advert we can also see a nice view of the original Economy Class interior. This is a sequence of three TV commercials by TAP:

LTU L-1011 video footage

It was recently made available on YouTube a footage about a Düsseldorf-Fuerteventura flight on a LTU L-1011 that shows what a charter flight looked like in the 80s.

TWA's TriStars and Court Line footage

We would also like to suggest a very interesting video on Youtube about Court Line's L-1011 and some of its special features:
